"I voted for the report on the modernisation of customs as this service has a crucial role in guaranteeing safety and security, protecting consumers and the environment, ensuring complete revenue collection, strengthening the fight against fraud and corruption, and ensuring respect for intellectual property rights. A practical, simple and effective customs system is vital for facilitating the movement of goods and trade on the internal market, especially for SMEs, An effective customs policy plays a key role in ensuring the safety and security of European consumers. The customs service today faces increasing volumes of import, export and transit transactions, and e-customs is one of the main aspects for modernising and simplifying the customs service. I think that modernising the EU’s customs strategy and customs instruments should be a high political priority, supported by an ample budget. We welcome the Commission’s initiative to promote the adoption of e-invoicing at EU level, a measure which will help simplify transactions and reduce tax fraud. We call on the Commission to submit to the European Parliament by June 2012 a report on the current status of compliance by Member States with EU customs legislation, including an action plan to rectify any shortcomings identified."@en1
