"Improving customs with a view to making monitoring and checking procedures leaner and less problematic for businesses trading with third countries is needed now as never before. Trying to modernise the customs system and cutting red tape basically implies taking an approach based on subsidiarity to business. Understanding, at a time of crisis like the present, that we need greater flexibility and simpler trade processes for European business owners should lead to a political and economic awareness that is geared more closely to resolving particular problems. However, I think it is worth clarifying that greater flexibility does not run contrary to ongoing strictness in terms of checks and the safety of products that go through the customs systems of Member States. Safety and lower administrative costs for traders are two factors that can, in my view, go hand in hand in the customs modernisation process."@en1
