"Customs regulation at an appropriate level has a considerable role in improving competitiveness. In order for it to be able to fulfil its role completely, the customs system must be modern and efficient.
I agree with the rapporteur’s opinion that a timely and transparent flow of information among all the parties involved must be enabled. Additionally, the establishment of close cooperation between customs administrations and market surveillance authorities must obviously be encouraged in order to intercept non-compliant products at the borders.
This is one of the reason why I welcome the fact that the enhanced Customs Code allows the retention of goods suspected of violating intellectual property law, and thus comprises one of the pillars of the Union’s legal framework for the protection of intellectual property rights.
I ask the Commission and the Member States to implement all the aforesaid, and to provide their officials with appropriate training in order to make the detection of products that pose a risk even more effective."@en1
