"I voted for this report because effective customs union is one of the cornerstones of the European integration process, as well as a strong basis for the free movement of goods, economic development and growth within the internal market. I support the fact that the customs service has a crucial role to play in guaranteeing safety and security, protecting consumers and the environment, as well as in strengthening the fight against fraud and corruption, and ensuring respect for intellectual property rights. I think that modernising the customs strategy should be a priority with a budget to match this ambition, as a good policy on efficient customs procedures can make a vital contribution to stimulating the EU’s global competitiveness. At the same time, I support the fact that customs administration must be modernised, and we need modernisation measures such as simpler customs legislation and interoperable computerised customs systems, which will help facilitate commercial practices. Last but not least, I support the fact that cooperation among the various stakeholders and institutions in the area of customs is essential to guarantee that the customs service fulfils its mission efficiently. I believe that we must ensure a prompt, transparent flow of information among all the stakeholders."@en1
