"I voted for the report drafted by Mr Salvini because I believe that it is vital to the European Union’s competitiveness in the current market. I should emphasise the need to adapt the system to current requirements. This means that a differentiation must be made between the transit of perishable and non-perishable goods. Ensuring that the European market is supplied in a timely and safe manner is a priority nowadays for the EU. At the same time, the principle of proportionality must be observed with respect to the measures adopted by national authorities. An effective customs system is vital for the development of intellectual property rights, as emphasised in point 22. It also provides the transparency required for SMEs’ current activities, thereby facilitating economic growth. In Romania, one of the reform’s main objectives was to root out corruption in the customs service. This provides the basis for Romania joining the Schengen area, in addition to the restructuring of the border police."@en1
