"The customs union is one of the most important foundations for the free movement of goods, economic development and growth in the internal market. Customs play an important role in safeguarding the EU’s financial interests, as the importation into the EU of counterfeit and pirated goods leads to a loss in revenue and violates intellectual property rights, and counterfeit products can pose serious risks to the health and safety of European consumers. Customs today face increasing volumes of import, export and transit transactions while resources remain limited, and it is therefore important to ensure an efficient and effective management of customs procedures. I agree that the Modernised Customs Code adopted in 2008 is very important to improving the current situation and ensuring a smooth, simple and well-functioning customs system. I believe e-customs, in particular, centralised customs clearance, is one of the main aspects of customs modernisation and simplification for strengthening the EU’s economic competitiveness and developing reliable trade relations with third countries."@en1
