"As the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member of the Committee on International Trade, I have followed all the work done on these recommendations. I approved the Committee on International Trade’s decision to postpone its vote on the day that Yulia Tymoshenko was sentenced. The decision sent a signal to Ukraine: not only does the European Union promote its values; it does not hesitate to defend those values in practice. The recommendations presented in plenary take this consideration fully into account, and I therefore voted in favour. However, I will continue to monitor the negotiations closely, because in addition to my concerns about human rights, I also have some questions about the content of the section on trade in this agreement. On that last point, it will be important to ensure that Ukraine agrees to make real concessions, particularly on eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers to exports, and accepting geographical indications."@en1
