"I supported this resolution, which recognises Ukraine’s existing contribution and achievements in connection with the association agreement and, at the same time, draws attention to important matters that need to be resolved. I do not, however, approve of the European Parliament continually speaking out in defence of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been convicted of corruption in a court of law, since the truth in this matter is not black and white. I am, however, glad to note that the negotiations with Ukraine are among the most advanced in the Eastern European region and are an example for the European Neighbourhood Policy as a whole. The association agreement to be concluded with Ukraine will be altogether broader, signifying substantive integration into Europe and opening up Ukraine’s prospects of becoming a member of the EU at a future date."@en1
