"Ukraine’s political leadership has demonstrated its commitment to European integration on several occasions. In doing so, it has deserved the conclusion of the association agreement, which would create a never before seen degree of integration between the European Union and Ukraine.
However, the imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko and the trials against other ministers in an attempt to prevent them from participating in next year’s parliamentary elections raise serious concerns. Recently, there have been concerns over the freedom of the press and the rule of law as well, not to mention the fact that Russia is trying to pressure its neighbour into refraining from signing a free trade agreement with the EU.
Despite all this, I do believe that we should take the necessary steps for the implementation of the association agreement. Ukraine must make a commitment to reforms, democratic values and the strengthening of human rights. We must provide appropriate financial, technical and legal assistance and support the preparation of anti-corruption policy in the country. We must also assist in negotiations with Russia, as well as in the field of energy security, in order to be able to strengthen the energy cooperation the country has entered into with the European Union."@en1
