"I voted for this report, which demonstrates the strong political will of the European Parliament, and indeed of the European Union and its Member States, to get involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Combating this epidemic and all STDs or co-infectious diseases calls for strong action from the public authorities. The European Parliament is sending out a powerful signal, including by having the sense to point out that this scourge will only be overcome through prevention and ‘sex education’, as well as through ‘strong linkages between sexual and reproductive health services’. Equally important is the will, expressed by the European Parliament, to combat the stigmatisation of people living with HIV/AIDS. Such discrimination can even lead to care being denied, which is totally unacceptable. For once, we can welcome the fact that over three quarters of MEPs are willing to commit to this cause. On the other hand, I regret to say that some MEPs, no doubt influenced by equally reactionary movements, still have a somewhat backward-looking attitude towards this issue. Fundamentalists are not always Muslims and are not always on the other side of the Mediterranean."@en1
