"Today, World AIDS Day, it is important for the European Parliament to send out a clear and consistent message. Despite the extraordinary progress made to date in HIV prevention and screening, we must remain vigilant and continue to uphold the objective of a ‘zero spread’ of the epidemic. That is the message that the European Parliament is sending out today in adopting a resolution calling for fairer access to screening, treatment and care, so as to reduce the number of HIV infections. Every year, over 27 000 people are infected in Europe, including 1 196 in Belgium in 2010, in other words, more than three a day. Although the impact of antiretroviral drugs is extremely effective – far fewer people now die from AIDS – we cannot afford to be complacent regarding safe sex or trivialise the risks of contamination. HIV is extremely complex and still raises many issues, for instance, the issue of co-infection, in particular, with tuberculosis and viral hepatitis B and C. The European Parliament’s resolution is part of an ongoing effort, in anticipation of a long-awaited vaccine."@en1
