"I voted in favour of the joint resolution. The report of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control on HIV surveillance states that, in 2009, 25 917 new cases of HIV infection were reported in countries of the European Union and European Economic Area. However, the situation in Greece is far worse. The increase in the percentage of patients with the virus has hit the 1 250% mark within a year. The reason is deliberate action by drug users to catch the virus, so that they can claim social benefits, and uncontrolled prostitution. The necessary measures which the present report calls on the Member States and the Commission to take are the right measures, but are probably too little too late for Greece. That is why the New Democracy group filed a written question to the Commission today, asking for Community resources to combat the spiralling increase in cases in Greece."@en1
