"On today’s World AIDS Day, 30 years after the world found out about HIV and AIDS, it is still important to draw attention to this painful problem. The European Parliament resolution I supported reveals the sad statistic that today, 33.3 million people throughout the world have been infected with HIV, i.e. as much as the total population of Canada. The only cause for celebration is that society’s efforts in the struggle against HIV/AIDS have borne fruit, and a reduction of nearly 20% in the number of cases of new infections during the last decade has been achieved, and similarly, the number of AIDS-related deaths has fallen in recent years. Above all, I believe that it is important to emphasise a stronger focus on prevention because it is infinitely most costly to deal with consequences, and not only in financial terms. For that purpose, Member States should, above all, contribute more to scientific research into preventive technologies, while securing the broader involvement of researchers and representatives of civil society."@en1
