". During the last decade, the number of people infected by HIV has dropped by almost 20% and, for the first time in 2009, more than 50% of HIV-positive women gave birth to uninfected children, thanks to the provision of access to treatment. The progress made is attributable, in particular, to the wider-scale use of antiretroviral drugs. This is precisely why the Commission must continue to use every opportunity available as part of the research and development framework programme to identify funding for promising projects promoting HIV/AIDS research and the development of new antiretroviral drugs, vaccines and innovative microbicides. These encouraging statistics also prove that the Commission and Member States must continue in the future as well to promote information campaigns for providing the general public with clear information about the HIV infection, prevention methods and risky types of behaviour."@en1
