"On this day, 1 December, World AIDS Day, I welcome the adoption by Parliament of a resolution reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to combating AIDS alongside those suffering from the disease. Given that over 25 000 new cases of HIV were diagnosed in the European Union in 2010 – up 4% on 2009 – the EU urgently needs to take strong action in this area. Although research has come very far over the last 20 years, it has not succeeded in stopping the spread of the epidemic. Furthermore, an estimated 30% of people living with HIV are unaware that they are carriers. The European Parliament has therefore called for strong measures to support research in this field. What is more, it is prevention and effective screening that we need. Research, prevention and widespread screening: these are the three pillars on which we must focus in the fight against AIDS, so that it quickly becomes a thing of the past."@en1
