"Today, we celebrate World AIDS Day. This is a highly significant event that helps maintain a high level of awareness of this complex illness and the worrying rise in the number of people infected. Since 1981, AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, making it one of the most damaging epidemics ever recorded. It is therefore essential for Europe to adopt a common strategy on fighting AIDS/HIV, which must be focused, above all, on prevention and providing detailed and effective information. I think, however, that the approach taken in Parliament’s resolution is not exhaustive and it does not give the right level of attention to the vulnerability of women to this illness. The number of women with HIV in Europe is constantly increasing: women account for some 35% of new diagnoses, in fact. Various studies have also shown that women are doubly at risk of infection through unprotected relations compared with men, which is due in equal measure to cultural restrictions and to women’s greater biological vulnerability. I think, therefore, that the resolution ought to have emphasised the initiatives that could be brought in to improve this situation."@en1
