"The rate at which the number of HIV infections is rising in Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, is quite alarming. In 2009, more than 25 000 new cases of HIV infection were diagnosed in the EU. Cross-border and cross-disciplinary cooperation is therefore essential to help address the epidemic, and it is unacceptable that there is still such a marked difference between Member States in access to HIV prevention, treatment and support services. I therefore agree there is an urgent need for more equitable access to HIV prevention in the EU, as well as to the relevant testing and treatment, while, at the same time, the necessary resources must be guaranteed. I believe the text of the resolution is well balanced overall and correctly brings across the principle that ‘the enemy is HIV, rather than HIV carriers’. Unfortunately, partisan pressure from some Members has led to the inclusion of a reference to abortion, which is unrelated. I will not be able to vote in favour because of that, and I would stress the contradiction between safeguarding life and health and attempting to justify abortion."@en1
