"I welcome the work done by the Single Market Forum in an effort to join forces to relaunch the single market in this difficult context of economic crisis. I would like to use this opportunity to insist on two points: 1 - The need to make the single market a reality for all European citizens and businesses so as to make it the real engine for growth in the European Union. The priority measures that the Commission will come up with in the coming months in the Single Market Act should focus on the need to drive sustainable and innovative economic growth, hand in hand with initiatives taken by Member States and the business community to boost growth in the EU at a time of economic recession. 2 - The single market must, as a matter of priority, generate new opportunities for businesses in Europe, starting with innovative SMEs. The Small Business Act principle must underpin all initiatives taken in the framework of the single market, to create a small business-friendly environment for our enterprises to thrive on the markets, accompanied by sound and fair regulation which does not create additional unnecessary burdens on SMEs which are the core of our potential for growth in Europe."@en1
