"I voted in favour of the report on the European Semester for Economic Policy Coordination. The economic and financial crisis has made some Member States cut public expenditure and investment in areas which are essential to Europe’s citizens, such as health and education. I regard it as important that both the Commission and the Council ensure that sustainable, inclusive growth is at the heart of all the policy proposals made as part of the European Semester, along with employment and job creation. The measures adopted as part of the national reform plans, aimed at implementing economic governance and the European Semester, must not exacerbate the social crisis. I advocate that the recommendations from the Commission and Council must be mainly focused on a social policy conducive to education and vocational training, access to employment, the reintegration of the unemployed into the labour market and better coordination of Member States’ social welfare systems. Furthermore, the EU must consolidate the internal market and remove the barriers preventing workers’ mobility within the EU. I call for the Commission’s recommendations, specific to each country, to be accompanied by assessments of the social impact, taking into account the promotion of employment and the guarantee of access to education and ongoing training programmes."@en1
