"In May 2010, the Commission proposed the introduction of a semester of stricter budgetary surveillance. This process has been in force since January 2011. The objective of the European Semester is to strengthen coordination between Member States and European institutions while the budget lines for the following year are still at the draft stage. In particular, it is about ensuring that national budgets are fully compatible, firstly, with the stability or convergence programmes presented a few months earlier and, secondly, with the economic guidelines laid down at European level. During those six months (January to July), the budgetary and structural policies of Member States will be reviewed, on the basis of the information they provide, in order to identify any possible inconsistencies or signs of imbalance. I supported this resolution on the first European Semester because it calls for, among other things, increased parliamentary control of euro area governance at national and European level alike. It is only right that the people’s representatives be involved in strengthening the legitimacy of Community action and analysing the measures proposed."@en1
