"Today, the European Semester is fully accepted as a cornerstone of the new economic governance framework. The main purpose of this process, which was set out for the first time in the first economic governance package, is to increase economic and fiscal coordination and to ensure the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy in all Member States. As such, it aims to attribute a greater level of democratic responsibility to national parliaments, in both the preparation and the subsequent implementation of their national budgets, and, at the same time, to offer a platform for the exchange of information and for sharing best budgetary implementation practices. It is undeniable that reinforcing economic coordination policies is one way for Europe to achieve the necessary fiscal consolidation it requires. The economic situation we are currently experiencing has further emphasised this need, and a lot certainly remains to be done in this respect."@en1
