"I voted in favour of this report since I believe that coordinating economic policies has an extremely important role to play in this period of major crisis for the European Union. Now more than ever, Europe must take a symmetrical approach, founded on a shared response from the Member States, to the problems deriving from the economic crisis, the resulting increase in inequality and macro-financial imbalances. In my opinion, the various countries’ policies ought to be highly interconnected so as to guarantee sustainable growth and increased employment, as set out in the Europe 2020 strategy. The Union must address European citizens’ lack of faith in European integration. I therefore consider it essential that this coordination is geared towards ensuring greater legitimacy, accountability and transparency in decision-making processes. Furthermore, since the goal of the European Semester is to check that the budget discipline is being applied and to supervise the realisation of the EU 2020 strategy, the requirement for transparency is essential. I am hoping for greater effort from the Member States to ensure that economic, financial and social policies are more effective."@en1
