"The European Semester and closer coordination of fiscal policies between the Member States, based on the prevailing neoliberal approach, is fully in keeping with plans by the Merkel/Sarkozy alliance. On the pretext of ‘regaining’ the trust of the markets, citizens’ rights are being sacrificed and social
is being trampled underfoot. Continuous austerity and continuous recession, unemployment and poverty are essentially becoming systemic. The European Semester has been overtaken by events. It no longer suffices to safeguard the interests of Ms Merkel and her allies. However, it is the ‘basic idea’ for creating a stricter stability pact and a ‘fiscal union of the willing’ which will put a stranglehold on the Member States and the European people. The budgets of the Member States will be planned and approved by Berlin, while the creation of a multi-track Europe of the ‘strong’ and the ‘weak’ will leave the weaker Member States prey to the whims of speculators. The report on the European Semester is fully in line with the failed neoliberal policies of the EU and deprives the Member States of the facility to exercise an alternative, anti-cyclical policy designed to redistribute wealth and sustainable growth. It is for all these reasons that I voted against the report."@en1
