"The European Parliament demonstrated resolve and ambition in dealing with the economic and financial crisis when, last September, it adopted the ‘economic governance package’, which contains six legislative proposals all designed to strengthen economic governance in the European Union. One of these proposals includes the establishment of a European Semester, a forum for debate in which to assess and coordinate the economic and budgetary policies of Member States before they go ahead and adopt them. Although I am convinced that this coordination is essential in order to pull Europe out of the crisis, I note that the Berès report does not really heed the lessons of the first European Semester, trialled last July."@en1
