"Unlike the other members of my group, I did not vote in favour of this report, which did not support the request by the Member of the European Parliament, Mr Viktor Uspaskich, who was elected from Lithuania, for a review of the European Parliament decision of 7 September 2010 regarding him. Through WikiLeaks, my earlier suspicion that the accusations made against Mr Uspaskich were politically motivated, and that procedure was violated in his case, were once again confirmed. Many Lithuanian politicians, including members of the governing party, have admitted that several procedural rules were violated, and that the accusations do not necessarily have any legal basis, but the withdrawal of the accusations made against Mr Uspaskich would tarnish the reputation of Lithuania’s governmental institutions and legal system. All of this reminds me of a series of earlier cases connected with members of my home party, the Estonian Centre Party, where it became clear after the elections that the accusations had been politically motivated and unfounded. In this case, protecting the reputation of the Lithuanian government agencies and legal system is not my concern, but the defence of justice and human rights is. These are among the axioms of the European Union considered to be of the utmost importance."@en1
