"In any democratic society, citizens have the right to demand honest and responsible behaviour from their leaders. The legitimacy of power is at stake, and we cannot permit scandals involving a small number of politicians to affect the reputation of all decision makers. All conflicts of interest should therefore be avoided, and transparency must be the order of the day. Accordingly, all relevant information relating to the professional lives of Members should be made available to the public. In this respect, I welcome the vote on Carlo Casini’s report. The text aims, in fact, to make entirely worthy changes to the Code of Conduct for Members of the European Parliament with respect to financial interests and conflicts of interest: a reminder of the general principles of conduct – disinterest, integrity, openness, diligence, honesty, accountability and respect for Parliament’s reputation; the ability to suspend a Member from all of his or her duties or as rapporteur for a committee; the declaration of all offices that could influence parliamentary work and/or that are remunerated; the publication of financial support and support in terms of staff; and the supervision of courtesy gifts."@en1
