"I supported the creation of an enhanced Code of Conduct for MEPs in order to provide a clear signal regarding my demands for elected officials to act transparently and to abide by a number of ethical rules. Accordingly, I consider it essential to prevent Members from undertaking an additional professional activity involving lobbying activities that could have an improper influence on the performance of their duties. Further, in order to rule out any possible abuse, provision must be made for penalties, which are proposed in this Code of Conduct. Finally, I rejected the initiatives aimed at weakening this set of measures – which some felt were ‘too transparent’ – as they would have prevented us from achieving an objective: that of restoring citizens’ faith in their elected officials."@en1
