"I voted in favour of establishing this new Code of Conduct for MEPs. The code forbids Members from undertaking lobbying activities alongside their parliamentary duties, prohibits us from receiving gifts worth more than EUR 150, requires us to notify all the activities that we carry out and remuneration that we receive whilst we are MEPs and before we take office, and requires us to declare any membership of an association, any type of interest in a company or organisation of so-called ‘influence’ and any other type of financial interest. In particular, I voted in favour of Amendment 10, which proposed abolishing the EUR 5 000 threshold above which MEPs must declare all outside activities for which they receive payment. By establishing these strict rules, our Parliament intends to make its daily activities clearer and more transparent. Equally, this is about restoring, to some extent, the external image of MEPs and about combating the prevailing anti-parliamentarism. This code is also intended to re-establish everyone’s accountability. I regret, however, that such measures are only adopted in response to scandals (one recalls here the scandal of the three MEPs caught acting in a blatantly corrupt manner by lobbyists in March 2011)."@en1
