"I would like to express my full support for the contents of the new Code of Conduct for Members of the European Parliament with respect to financial interests and conflicts of interest. I am glad that we managed to reach a compromise during work in the relevant committee, as reflected by the large number of votes cast by my fellow Members in favour of amending the Rules of Procedure. New changes to the Code of Conduct for Members of the European Parliament represent yet another important step towards introducing clearer rules and, at the same time, clear sanctions for a failure to comply with these rules, and they aim to increase confidence in Parliament as well as making the work of the European institutions more transparent overall. The new rules focus on introducing rigorous provisions in relation to the problem of conflicts of interest, the preparation of financial statements published on Parliament’s website and the acceptance of special gifts. Moreover, the new provisions also cover rapporteurs, who may lose their mandate if they violate the abovementioned rules contained in the Code of Conduct. I think that the creation of an Advisory Committee on the Conduct of Members is also a good initiative, which will assist Members in the practical interpretation and implementation of the rules of the code. I would once again like to thank the rapporteur from the Committee on Constitutional Affairs for the huge amount of work he has put into preparing the report."@en1
