"Broadly speaking, the report considers that the new Code of Conduct will increase the transparency needed for elected Members of the European Parliament (EP) to perform their duties. The Members of the EP will have to submit a declaration of financial interests containing a range of information including
their employment history for the three-year period before taking office with the EP. This report follows some scandals involving Members of the current legislative term, some of whom have since resigned, hence the concerns that are now being mentioned here.
Naturally, we agree with the ban on accepting or receiving ‘any direct or indirect financial benefit or other reward in exchange for influencing, or voting on, legislation, motions for a resolution, written declarations or questions tabled in Parliament or any of its committees’. The Code of Conduct stipulates that Members cannot enter into ‘any agreement to act or vote in the interest of any other legal or natural that would compromise their freedom of vote’. Its effectiveness will need to be assessed and monitored."@en1
