"The report in question, drafted by Mr Casini, deals with the amendments to Parliament’s Rules of Procedure relating to the Code of Conduct for Members of the European Parliament with respect to financial interests and conflicts of interest. The current economic crisis, which many citizens attribute to politicians’ wrong decisions, has led to this group of professionals being put under very tight public surveillance involving new information technology, as in the case of with the disclosure of confidential information. Today, more than ever before, it is crucial that rules for transparency are established with respect to the financial interests of public officials. In the case of Members of the European Parliament, under the terms of Article 232 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, it is up to Parliament to establish rules on the interests of its Members. As I am aware that appearances are extremely important, I am voting for the proposed amendments to the existing regulation."@en1
