"We all remember the scandal of the MEPs who ‘sold’ amendments to false lobbyists who were, in fact, journalists. Although this case, which illustrates the general climate of suspicion towards the political class, only involved a tiny minority of MEPs, it sowed doubt about Members’ integrity. By establishing strict rules governing the declaration of financial interests and the prevention of conflicts of interest, the Code of Conduct aims to improve transparency and therefore, so I hope, the image of MEPs in the eyes of the outside world. MEPs will have to declare the professional activities they undertake alongside their parliamentary duties as well as those they carried out before they took office, and rapporteurs may see themselves relieved of that role if a conflict of interest is brought to light. The point of the Code of Conduct is to restore accountability. It is about ensuring that cases like this, which harm everyone, do not happen again in the future."@en1
