"In the last few years, Croatia, which has been in accession negotiations with the European Union since 2005, has implemented radical structural reforms enabling it to meet EU membership requirements. Major reforms have been carried out with a view to promoting job creation, increasing competitiveness and strengthening fiscal policies. Many challenges remain, and the Croatian authorities must continue their reforms, particularly their judicial reforms, to combat corruption and organised crime. In order to heal the wounds of the past, Croatia needs to redouble its efforts to prosecute war criminals, follow the set of recommendations made by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and encourage the return of war refugees, especially the Serbs. Croatia’s forthcoming accession is a positive signal for the region as a whole; it is a sign that reforms pay, and that is why I voted in favour of this report."@en1
