"About eight years ago, Croatia applied to join the European Union. In the meantime, profound changes have taken place in the political situation of that country, leading to Croatia’s transformation into a solid democracy, underpinned by its respect for human rights, which deserves EU policy makers’ applause. Moreover, if we think about the European Union, Croatia’s accession represents the opening up of the Balkans and one more step towards uniting all of Europe politically. In this sense, an incentive for the consolidation of democracies of the different states of the Balkan Peninsula opens up here, with a view to possible accession to the common area. In view of these facts, it is necessary to begin the process of effective entry into the EU. As such, I voted for the resolution and I look forward to the Republic of Croatia’s accession, which represents another step forward in the history of the EU."@en1
