"The example of Croatia again shows that integration into the EU is one of the most effective methods of economic, political and even social change. EU enlargement requires much effort and commitment but is a mutually beneficial instrument which ensures peace, stability, reconciliation and development, and this effect is not confined to one country but also has a regional impact. I hope that Croatia’s success will encourage the other states in the region to go energetically down this path. Even after the Treaty concerning the Accession of the Republic of Croatia has been signed at the European Council on 8-9 December, it will not be a time for relaxation but rather for continuing political and economic reforms, in particular, in the areas of consolidating the rule of law, combating corruption and organised crime, safeguarding human rights, improving the business environment and creating friendly and stable relations with neighbours. The EU must also prepare properly for Croatia’s accession, take account of it in the 2013 multiannual financial framework, and include Croatia in negotiations for the 2014-2020 multiannual financial framework. I hope that the ratification process in EU countries will run smoothly and that Croatia will be ready to become the 28th Member State as scheduled from 1 July 2013, during the Lithuanian Council Presidency."@en1
