"This report, drafted by Mr Swoboda, focuses on Croatia’s application, which merits the agreement of the Council, as does the draft Treaty concerning the Accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union, the Protocol and the Final Act. All of the conditions have therefore been met for Croatia to accede to the European Union from 1 January 2013, becoming its 28th Member State. This is a very long process, the final stages of which have only been possible due to the determination of all the politicians involved and a consistent EU policy. Only through this process have there been significant steps taken in the relations between Croatia and Serbia. However, this process does not end on 9 December with the signing of the Treaty of Accession in Brussels. Although much has been done, particularly in terms of combating corruption, much remains still to do, especially in relation to human rights, the consolidation of the Rule of Law and the fulfilment of all the criteria of the Copenhagen Agreement. I am therefore voting for this report and I welcome the way in which this process has been conducted, as it sets an example for other candidate countries for accession to the EU to follow."@en1
