"By consenting to Croatia’s accession to the European Union, the European Parliament has paved the way for the start of the country’s accession process and its ratification by the 27 Member States of the current European club. This agreement should be ratified at the European Council on 9 December with a view to Croatia’s official accession on 1 July 2013. Of course, now is not the time to hold celebrations such as those that marked the enlargement ceremonies held when 10 new countries joined the Union on 1 June 2004. However, it is important to welcome this jewel of the Mediterranean in a fitting manner; in other words, enthusiastically and firmly. A spontaneous accession, rather than accession by default, is needed, given the efforts made by Croatia’s people, and given, too, its standard of living and the economic situation in Croatia, both of which are much better than the indicators for other countries were when they joined. The crisis that has reigned in the Union since 2009 also implies the need for a firm stance towards new members, who have to become part of a virtuous circle: tight budgets and relentless efforts to combat corruption and to promote transparency. This, too, is a message that the Croatian authorities must hear."@en1
