"I abstained from the vote on Croatia’s application for accession to the European Union. Indeed, this report consents to the Republic of Croatia becoming a member of the European Union. Although the Commission is required to report regularly to Parliament on the extent to which the Croatian authorities are honouring their commitments in order to fulfil the obligations incumbent on them when Croatia joins the EU on 1 July 2013, I personally believe that the crisis that the European Union is experiencing is sufficiently serious as to suspend the accession process. The European Union’s current Member States, in particular, those in the euro area, must be in a strong enough position to accommodate a new member, with all the advantages and disadvantages it will bring. The current efforts of the Heads of State or Government to build the future of the EU are evidence of the urgent need to consolidate our
