"The decision on Croatia’s accession, or that of any other country, to the European Union must come, first and foremost, from the free expression of the sovereign will of this country’s people. This is all the more important in the knowledge that this free expression – which, of course, involves a deep, participatory and informed discussion and decision – was not always ensured in other cases in the past.
We should neither ignore nor underestimate the meaning, nature and aims of this process of integration. The experience of other countries, including Portugal, shows us that the process of capitalist integration embodied by the EU involves the destruction of productive capacity and employment, the country’s increasing dependence, a disadvantageous, subordinated position which is peripheral to the process of the international division of labour, the loss of sovereignty over key elements which would have allowed our people to realise their wishes and aspirations, and which are absolutely essential to their free collective self-determination.
However, the internationalisation of the economy, the international division of labour, the growing cooperation between Member States and the processes of integration correspond to realities and trends of development which are not unique to capitalism. We are therefore fighting for this other Europe – a Europe that is not only possible, but also increasingly necessary."@en1
