"This proposal for a recommendation, drafted by Mr Swoboda, focuses on the Treaty concerning the Accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union, one of the three instruments that make up the process of accession of a country to the EU: treaty, protocol and final act. The accession of Croatia to the EU is a moment of great importance for Europe, and represents another step forward in the process of bringing stability to the Balkans. For Croatia, this phase does not represent the end of the process, but only the successful completion of one more stage. I would point out that this accession is an historic moment for Europe, as was evident in the enthusiasm with which Parliament applauded the adoption of the proposal for Croatia’s accession. As we are looking at a ‘happy marriage’ – the EU has an interest in its enlargement into the Balkans, and Croatia has much to gain from its accession to the single market – I welcome the accession of Croatia to the EU and hope that the Croatian Government will continue the process of democratisation and reform that is already under way, thus contributing to the principles which underlie the construction of the single market."@en1
