"Croatia has been an independent nation for twenty years now and an EU accession candidate for eight. The country has successfully met the required criteria to become a fully-fledged Member State. The accession process has helped consolidate democracy and has mobilised other sweeping political, social and economic reforms in Croatia. The nation’s accession is important both to the EU and to the Balkan region in general. I support the rapporteur and believe that Croatia should be accepted as a Member State on 1 July 2013 as long as it continues the improvements made thus far. Until this date, I encourage Croatia to continue to step up its prosecution of war criminals, better facilitate the return of refugees, improve women’s equality in regard to equal pay and representation in political institutions and improve LGBT rights due to the violence demonstrated at the LGBT pride march in June 2011."@en1
