"The objectivity of statistics as a branch of applied mathematics gives it a special status both in the area of scientific research and in public and private organisations. There is no government that does not have a body responsible for statistical studies. The EU itself has the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat). In an ever-growing area where roads are taking on a key role in the transport of goods, reliable data are vital in order to shape all of the studies in this area, which are only possible using statistics. This report, drafted by Mr Simpson, concerns the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on statistical returns in respect of the carriage of goods by road in the EU (recast). Given the opinion of the Consultative Working Party of the legal services of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, according to which this proposal does not include any substantive amendments, I am voting in favour."@en1
