"I voted for the resolution on tackling early school leaving. The text recalls one of the main goals of the Europe 2020 strategy: reducing the rate of early school leaving to less than 10% by 2020, which would have a positive impact in terms of cutting youth unemployment and improving employment rates in the EU (more than half of Europeans who left school early are currently unemployed). This goal is all the more important given that the number of jobs available for low-skilled or unskilled labour will decline even further in the coming years. The resolution also highlights a worrying situation: one young person out of every four currently has reading difficulties. It is clear, however, that reading is a vital tool for making progress in any school subject, becoming integrated into the world of work, understanding information, communicating properly and participating in cultural activities. Let us therefore go back to basics: specific measures for remedying deficiencies in reading skills are urgently required. Furthermore, we should promote early learning of new information and communication technologies (NICT), such as language technologies, which young people have the advantage of being able to master quickly."@en1
