"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the first Single Market Forum brought together citizens, entrepreneurs, social bodies and policy makers from all levels to discuss the state of the single market. Much attention has been paid to the Commission document outlining the 20 obstacles that are most frequently encountered by citizens and enterprises, and which therefore confirm the gap that exists between the expectations and the reality of the single market, 20 years from its foundation. Thematic seminars were held to discuss the most sensitive issues. One such seminar that should be mentioned was the one on the recognition of professional qualifications, the posting of workers and basic social security, fiscal hurdles and the streamlining of legislation on public tenders. In conclusion, the meeting provided an opportunity to raise spirits and discuss the problems that are still preventing the achievement of one of the main objectives set by the EU, although the latter has already delivered countless benefits to consumers and 21 million companies throughout Europe."@en1
