"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I believe that the compromise reached in conciliation is fairly satisfactory: there has been an increase in the funds to support small and medium-sized enterprises and a legitimate increase, also, in the package for FRONTEX, the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders.
At a time of obvious difficulty, one could not have asked for more. Indeed, I would have even preferred it if more cuts had been made to certain budget items that I do not consider essential: I am referring, for example, to the increase in the funds for cooperation with Asia and Latin America.
However, I think that the additional increase in the appropriations to support the Turkish Cypriot community is an outrage: I do not believe that the European Union should legitimise a population that is illegally occupying territory that does not belong to it. In any case, the increase has not placed a particularly heavy burden on the Member States, which have already been severely tested by the crisis, and this was undoubtedly the most important thing to ensure."@en1
