"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the resolution on the EU response to HIV infection, which we have played an active part in drafting and signed, calls attention to the extraordinarily high number of infections affecting European citizens each year. In particular, it draws attention to the fact that 30% of HIV-positive people are co-infected with hepatitis C.
The European Union must implement policies informing of the risks that people run in becoming infected with a disease, which, in addition to being debilitating, often causes the death of sufferers. Unfortunately, owing to an amendment passed by a majority in committee, the original text has been changed to include a sentence on abortion with which we do not agree, as it has nothing to do with the resolution.
We have specifically requested a separate vote on the change introduced by the amendment on abortion in order to delete it, in the hope that the original text, which we support, is upheld. Should this not be the case, whilst we believe that this resolution is important for European citizens and for young people in particular, we will be unable to vote in favour and will have to abstain."@en1
