"Mr President, 91 years ago Transylvania and other territories of Hungary were disannexed from the country in complete disregard for the Wilsonian principle of self-determination and without the opinion of the Hungarian population concerned having been asked. After so many years it is not my intention to reopen old historic territorial disputes, but I would nevertheless like to raise my voice in defence of Hungarians living outside the borders of the country.
It is intolerable and untenable that Olivér Boldogi, and presumably several others among his countrymen, will be stripped of their citizenship and expelled from their homeland, the historical region of Upper Hungary in Slovakia, because they openly profess their Hungarian identities.
It is also intolerable and untenable that in the Romanian region of Transylvania, in our own homeland, we Hungarians are no longer even allowed to form a Hungarian faculty at our former Hungarian university in Târgu Mureș. If our territories have been stripped from us, at least minority rights and our national autonomy should be granted us in these areas, as stated even by the Declaration of Alba Iulia. Far be it from us to dispute Romania’s claim to Transylvania on its very national holiday; in fact, we wish it a happy celebration …"@en1
