".
The European Council meeting on 9 December 2011 will debate as a priority the EU’s economic situation, the debt crisis in Member States and the increase in convergence within the euro area, as well as issues related to completing the internal market and implementing the Digital Agenda. However, Europe’s leaders ought to adopt urgent measures promoting economic growth and job creation. In this context, the measures relating to increasing energy efficiency, completing the internal energy market and developing the energy infrastructure are becoming of paramount importance to energy security and to stabilising the EU’s balance of trade. The European Council should examine the results of the resistance tests which nuclear power plants in various Member States underwent, and adopt decisions aimed at increasing the safety of Europe’s nuclear reactors. Furthermore, the development of the transport and information and communications technology infrastructures is vital to completing the internal market and to the EU’s economic and social development. All these measures which are aimed at economic growth and job creation should be correlated and supported via the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework. I welcome the inclusion on the agenda of December’s European Council meeting of an item concerning the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area, as well as the signature of Croatia’s EU Accession Treaty."@en1
