"The greater part of the surface area of the oceans (two thirds) is not subject to the jurisdiction of any states. That is why problems like those relating to global fishing demand integrated responses from the different states, because they do not have the capacity to react alone. In this context, the European Union must take a leading role by providing itself with the instruments needed to combat illegal fishing and by strengthening cooperation with international organisations capable of carrying out control and monitoring activities with broad underlying support. Fisheries regulation is essential not only for a fair, competitive market, but also, and above all, for the very sustainability of some fish species and the balance of the ecosystem. That is why I voted in favour of this report."@en1
