"Illegal fishing threatens all the actions which the international community and the European Union in particular have taken to balance a strong and dynamic fishing industry against the necessary replenishment of fish stocks. Although, by its illegal nature, it is not possible to obtain precise data, the fact is that recent studies suggest 11 to 26 million tonnes of fish a year, with 11 million representing 15% of total marine catches. As Portugal is a maritime and fishing country, it is extremely important for me that the EU should take every step to protect fishing and prevent illegal catches, which harm everyone, especially communities that rely on fishing as their principal source of revenue."@en1
